This week is National Library Week. As its title suggests, it celebrates the purpose and the people behind these institutions.
No longer merely emporiums of books, the library has expanded it’s world while staying true to its purpose—providing access to knowledge.Some may think that these institutions are no longer needed, but that couldn’t be less true.
It’s easy to forget in a world where many have easy access to the Internet that not everyone enjoys this luxury. Libraries attempt to right this information inequality.
Not only do they provide access to the web, they teach people how to use computers and find information for themselves. Which is an invaluable and necessary skill.
Libraries have long been the last defense against ignorance, and I think that they’ll keep doing that job as long as there are people who want to learn.
If you don’t think that’s true, well I’m guessing you haven’t been into a library recently. Maybe venture into one this week, you might be surprised by what you find.
