…Take the Lead

on

We’re well into Women’s History Month, so this What to Watch Wednesday I thought I’d take a moment to honor just a few of the fabulous ladies of the smaller screen.

With each passing season, it seems like there are more and more programs not only about women, but featuring more women in front of and behind the camera. On top of that, representation of women on these programs has become increasingly diverse.

A lot of this change is coming from public demand, but it’s also from women in the industry looking out for and lifting each other up. It’s encouraging, and a strong contradiction to the tired trope of women seeing other women as competition.

We’ve by no means reached the ideal. We still have quite a ways to go, but sometimes you to take a moment to appreciate the strides you’ve managed to make.

If you think this kind of optimism is a little far-fetched, just look at Shonda Rhimes’…I mean ABC’s Thursday night lineup.

Still not convinced? Beyond basic cable there’s Netflix’s, “Orange is the New Black,” and, “Jessica Jones.” Not to mention the continuation of, “House of Cards,” with Robin Wright as the lead. On Hulu there’s, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

On CBS’s All Access there’s a woman of color as the lead on, “Star Trek Discovery,” and a diverse army of leading ladies on, “The Good Fight.” Even on Amazon, there’s, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Hopefully I’ve made my point. We still have large strides to take, but it’s nice to see so many stories by women and about women being told.

…just for fun:
