As you may have noticed (bless you, if you haven’t) this week has been a bit rough for a variety of reasons. But there is still joy to be had, and so I’d like to take a moment for a story that got a bit buried earlier this week–the Girl Scouts.
As any scout knows, Girl Scouts are prepared for anything, including having their awesomeness overlooked. So it’s only natural that this week’s awesome announcement was overshadowed by a whole lot of messiness.
On Tuesday, 23 new badges in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) were added to the Girl Scout catalog. The skills range from roller coaster design at the Daisy level to website design for the Senior level. But really once you design a roller coaster in kindergarten it’s all downhill from there.
It’s a definite broadening of horizons in a week that’s featured some very narrow minds. And as a former scout (who’s not quite sure she ever actually bridged out, so possibly current on a technicality) it’s wonderful to see this female-forward organization continue to move in the right direction. And if we get a few more lady game board designers in the process (actual Daisy badge) I think we’re all winners.
