The clock powers that be have determined that an extra second will be added on June 30th this year. Also known as a “leap” second, it means that we’ll see an 11:59:60 on that day before switching over to July 1st.
So why do we need an extra second?
Good question. While some would argue that we don’t actually need an extra second, the short answer is, because the world is spinning slower. The second is being added to sync our clocks with the earth’s rotation. Which sounds terrifying, but don’t worry, the earth isn’t winding its way down to a standstill. The earth speeds up and slows down all the time.
Which does beg the question, why add that second now if we’ll just have to take it back later? Although, a much more interesting question is — what will you do with that extra second?
While the obvious answer is sleep, there’s an infinite number of possibilities, and thankfully, you have a few months to decide.
