“Argo” is the unexpected hit of the awards season, that isn’t really that much of a surprise.
It’s a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, even though you already know the ending (or you should).
What may come as a surprise, is where “Argo” is also a big hit — Iran.
If you don’t know why that’s relevant or surprising, then you should see the movie…and maybe try to read a bit more.
Yes, the little-big film that could, has become an unexpected hit in the Iranian bootleg movie scene.
Bootleg sellers say “Argo,” which only recently became available, is their best seller in years, selling several hundred thousand copies (and counting).
The hostage crisis of 1979 is still a sore spot in US-Iranian diplomacy. So, the fact that a film about a covert US operation that successfully snuck six embassy employees out of the country Iran is a bootleg hit, well that’s a good thing.
Will this piece of Hollywood diplomacy give it an edge over its other competitors at the Oscars? That remains to be seen, but it sure won’t hurt its chances.
