Those of you thinking that just because the dream of a Triple Crown winner is several weeks gone now means this isn’t just as exciting…shame on you.
We still have a showdown ahead of us. It’s Shackleford v. Animal Kingdom in an epic battle of speed and awesome names.
Of course the real victory today happened off the track (and several days ago). I am of course referring to the return of ‘ol blue eyes and the classic Kander and Ebb tune: “New York, New York.”
From 1997 until 2009 the song had been played as the horses paraded on the track. Last year it was replaced by a more modern tune “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys.
Why? Perhaps an attempt to bring in a younger hipper crowd to the horse racing scene.
Personally I think a Facebook event may have been more impactful, or perhaps and iPhone app?
But really, if Frank Sinatra is what is keeping them away, do you really want their interest?
Of course while this may be a victory for the classics, we mustn’t forget those left behind. Sorry Miss Keys but the incredibly brief reign of your hit has ended.
Just remember, you’ll always have the 2010 Belmont Stakes (and a few Grammy’s).
