It’s Memorial Day weekend (well close enough) and chances are good that you are heading out of town to enjoy the long, holiday weekend.
If you’re traveling by air and happen to find yourself near a person who considers their security woes to be far worse than the millions of other air travelers, take comfort in a recent TSA announcement.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is keeping records of the people who feel the need to pitch a hissy fit while going through security.
Specifically, they’re keeping an eye on those who make their screeners feel threatened. Behavior that will qualify you for a spot on what I’m calling the “flying idiots list” includes, but is not limited to:
- Threats, bullying, verbal abuse, and remarks about death or violence- I think Thumper said it best, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
- Brandishing a real or fake weapon- that will get you on the “super flying idiots” list
- Intentionally scaring workers- that means no more shouting “BOO!” when you jump out from behind the metal detector
- Excessive displays of anger such as punching a wall or kicking equipment (or people and small animals)- also no biting or pinching
Next time you find yourself behind a bullying/fake weapon wielding/scary/excessive wall and equipment punching passenger know that this individual is reserving themselves a nice high spot on the “flying idiots” list and won’t be on your plane (or any other plane) anytime soon.
So, pretty much if you’re sane and courteous, and remember that the security screener is also a human being then you really don’t have to worry about the list.
And always try and remember that the people running the security checkpoint did not create the policy which requires you to take your shoes off and place them in a bin.
So be nice, it never hurts to smile and thank the people who have been working hard to make sure you’re safe when you fly. Plus, if you happen to thank a “mad at the world” screener, I promise you will feel only feel better about your kind deed when they scowl back at you.
