…Even Out

“Equal pay for equal work”–if you haven’t had this slogan ringing in your ears recently then you really need to catch up with your current events.

Yesterday, the Paycheck Fairness Act was brought to the Senate floor and, as predicted, did not pass.

It’s hard to qualify this as a large blow to the cause. At this point, this women’s rights movement is used to it. And given its timing, this particular effort was most likely a political maneuver to pick up female voters, rather than a genuine push for equality.

Still, it does bring up some not so flattering issues in our modern society. Why, for instance, is this even still an issue? Is it just a political stunt being kept in the rotation to garner votes every few years?

Most of us probably don’t want to know the answer to that second question. It seems a high price to pay just to get someone elected, and sadly they’re not the ones who are paying it.

  1. First, full disclosure – I’m a male. Second, why do we need a law for this? Who will sit in judgement on individual’s salaries? I pay my top performers top wages, regardless of gender, race or religious beliefs (although personal cleanliness can enter into the equation). Just feels like a bit of a symptom of “everybody’s a winner” in some regards…

Go back to my opening disclosure – I’m a male so I can’t appreciate fully the feeling of inequality. I just look around my world, though, and I don’t see the problem that needs fixed by governmental intrusion.

  2. OMC I take your point, however, not all males are as equitable as you! I worked as a Marketing Manager for years and in a lot of instances equivalent males doing the same job got a few thousand extra £ in their pay packet. I personally believe that ‘he’s the breadwinner’ mentality still comes into play even in these more enlightened times. Oh and of course the standard ‘well you will have babies at some point and leave’ is another understood but never actually said reason. I’m not sure that a law will fix it but at least it will prevent less honest men like you toe the line.

  3. Oops my last line should read at least it will make less honest men like you toe the line.

  4. Sally, I understand and have seen plenty of practices that simply reek; I’m not sure how folks justify their actions.
